20th Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow

20th Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow

                                           25.06.2010-04.07.2010

Difficult to believe, but one of the most important artistic events in Kraków will be taking place this year for what is already the twentieth time. The organisers, headed by festival chief and director of the Jewish Culture Festival Association – Janusz Makuch – play down attempts to fête their efforts with pompous celebratory language. After all what really counts for them are the days to come.

The festival has its regular events that have consistently drawn huge audiences for years, not infrequently from the furthest reaches of our globe. We have grown accustomed to them and without them the festival wouldn’t be itself: concerts, including the ceremonial inauguration and the finale – Shalom on Szeroka, which explodes with energy, lectures and workshops too numerous to count, walks and outings and also exhibitions, shows, film screenings… and all of these against the backdrop of Kazimierz, Kraków’s old Jewish quarter. Over the last two decades Kazimierz has been transformed from a crumbling, half-forgotten relic of former times to a centre of cultural life, an obligatory stopover point on tourist trails and a fashionable destination for nocturnal outings – without losing its spiritual and historical dimension. As a matter of fact unrenovated tenements with flaking courtyards still loom into view from the corner of streets, reminding us of this place’s metamorphosis.

Also contributing to this metamorphosis is the Jewish Culture Festival: thanks to this, for several years it’s felt like a breath of fresh air becoming acquainted with the latest and most interesting phenomena being observed in the diaspora, dispersed as it is all over the world. Thanks to this, we have encountered artists who are not just nursing tradition but also conducting a creative dialogue with it, sometimes fearless in its boldness. No surprise then that the programme features DJ workshops and events, and also a comics convention – the last of these conducted by Israeli guru of pop culture, Ari Kaplan, who will be giving lectures on it – as well as the traditional Jewish cookery workshops, which will be broken up by a series of lectures by Janna Gur on various aspects of Israeli cuisine. Giving expression to these changes is the festival’s new logo – the process of its creation can be followed on the event’s internet site.

Out of the festival’s important new features, particularly worthy of our notice is Cheder – this multi-functional centre at ul. Józefa 36 was already last year fulfilling the role of a festival club: this year it is focusing even more attention onto itself, thanks both to the concerts in the MuLaKuŻ series – concerts by the Lithuanian Banda Dzeta and the Raphael Roginski Ensemble – and the numerous meetings collectively known as Star@Cheder. During the series of concerts in the evening, it is worth taking a peek at nearby Alchemia, which will be playing host to the Jazz Klez Sessions hosted by the dependable Paul Brody, film screenings and the concerts by the Kroke band (29 and 30 June).

The main block of concerts will begin on Sunday 27 June with the ceremonial Cantors’ Concert – just like the other concerts in the Tempel Synagogue, this one will also be transmitted on the internet. Over the days that follow, tradition will be blended with the new – an appearance by the avant garde Jamie Saft Trio (28 June) is followed by a recital by Benzion Miller on the steps of the Isaac Synagogue, which explores the song repertoire of Shlomo Carlebach. After Brave Old World, who are extremely well known to Kraków audiences (29 June), we’ll be able to hear a group of Israeli stars of ethnic music embracing Sephardic music and more – these include Piris and Mark Eliyahu, known to us from their performance as the HaYona Ensemble, and vocalist Esti Kenan Ofri – in the Ad Adei Ad / To Eternity concert (30 June).

Also let’s not forget the exhibitions, which include: Familiarising Jerusalem. Photographs 1857-1920, presented in cooperation with the Ethnographic Museum; Haredim – photographs focusing on life and the unknown rites of the most religious communities by Menachem Kahana at the Manggha Museum; Yemeni jewellery exhibition and workshops; and we should also mention the theatre shows, appearing at the festival again after a long absence – like, for instance, Renana Raz’s dance theatre with the OV show based on a dybbuk motif... all these also build up an image of the festival that, in accordance with its name, is able to present an original choice of phenomena from the whole spectrum of Jewish culture, while reconciling respect for tradition with an openness toward the avant garde – and the future.
