Professor Adam Walaszek

Adam Walaszek, Ph.D. is a professor of history at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora (Ph.D. at the Jagiellonian University in 1981, habilitation in 1989, Professorship in 1995). He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Rochester, NY, Central Connecticut State University. He received grants and scholarships from: the Kosciuszko Foundation (New York), University of Wisconsin, the Volkswagen Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, Lanckoroński Foundation (Rome, Italy, May 2005). He is a member of Polish American Historical Association and Polonia Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. From 2004 - 2008  he was Editor-in-Chief of Przegląd Polonijny (quarterly published by the Polish Academy of Sciences) and a member of the editorial board of Dve Domoviny/Two Homelands (Ljubliana, Slovenia). Since 1999 he is a member of the editorial board of: Polish and Polish American Studies Series (Ohio University Press, Athens, US); Central European Studies (University of Rochester Press, Rochester, US). He is also a member of the Scientific Council of the Centre de documentation sur les migrations humaines (Dudelange, Luxemburg). In 1994 he received Joseph Swastek Award for the best article published in the Polish American Studies (United States) and in 2005 he was awarded Mieczysław Haiman Award of Polish American Historical Association for outstanding merits to the study of Polish American ethnic group. He participated in 68 international conferences worldwide. In 2005 he was nominated by the International Committee of Historical Sciences to organize a panel on mass migrations and their economic, political and cultural consequences during the 20th International Congress of Historical Sciences in Sydney, Australia. He teaches the courses on: the history of international migrations, history of Polish ethnic group in the United States, history of immigration to the US, and US ethnic history.

Research interests:

His main areas of research are: international migrations, history of Polish ethnic groups, in particular in the United States, US social history, childhood in immigrant communities in America.

Publications:

He published 4 monographs, edited 6 collections of essays and historical documents, and published 95 scholar articles in Poland and abroad. His recent publications in English are: “Labor Diasporas in Comparative Perspective: Polish and Italian Migrant Workers in the Atlantic World between the 1870s and the 1920s”, in: The Historical Practice of Diversity.
