Prof. Garry Robson

I am a Sociologist and specialist in Cultural Studies. All of my courses have one thing in common: they are designed in such a way as to offer a balance between the study of important social theorists and schools of thought one the one hand, and facilitate students reflection on their own social and cultural experiences on the other.

I am therefore not interested in teaching sociology and social theory for their own sake, interesting as they are, but in inviting the participants on my courses to evaluate their usefulness and relevance and, where appropriate, to integrate them into their own reflections on the things in which they are interested.

For example the compulsory course on Social Change, which is primarily sociological, is designed to do two things: first, to allow students to explore some of the ways in which social theorists conceptualize the times in which we live (e.g. in terms of globalization and post/late modernity); second, to connect these theoretical descriptions to concrete case studies of processes and experiences with which we are all familiar (e.g. migration, multiculturalism, digital culture, surveillance, global cities, education). We hope, in this way, to set up a context in which students can both learn about some of the key ideas of the 20th century and bring them to bear on the interpretation of their own experiences.

One of the other compulsory courses I teach is Introduction to Cultural Studies. This offers an advanced grounding in the core themes of the field and an opportunity to explore the development of the Cultural Studies paradigm and cutting-edge debates in the interpretation of cultures. We examine the ways in which popular cultural phenomena have been understood from a variety of theoretical perspectives. The focus of the course is on a critical engagement with key thinkers and ideas and, again, the role these might play in the analysis of our own interests.

I also offer two optional courses. One is the Globalization of "Black" American Expressive Culture, which focuses on an examination of the generation, development and global spread of distinctively "black" American aesthetics in popular music. We look at the formation of African-American culture and the ways in which popular music is a sphere in which black and other Americans have produced the musical art forms that, arguably, represent the USAs most unique and powerful contribution to global popular culture.

My other optional course is Theory and Globalization in the Sociology of Sport; it covers key theoretical approaches in the study of sports as social and cultural phenomena. We explore the most notable attempts to take sport seriously as a subject of serious analysis; theoretical approaches will be combined with empirical case studies of particular sports. The course aims to provide participants with an opportunity to engage with and evaluate examples of applied social theory, and gain new insights into their own interests and experiences in the realm of sport. The key, interlocking, themes are Modernity, Nationalism, the Body, Social Identity and Globalization.
