Prof. Ann Hetzel Gunkel on her expierience of Teaching and Learning in TAS

In 2011-12, Ann Hetzel Gunkel, Ph.D. served as Visiting Fulbright Professor of Cultural Studies in the Department of International &  Political Studies’ Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. She is Associate Professor of Humanities & Cultural Studies and Director of the Cultural Studies Program at Columbia College Chicago, USA.

Do you want to live and study in one of Europes greatest medieval cities? Do you want to be surrounded by art, music, cafes, clubs, and cultural events? Do you want to learn in an international environment in a picture postcard setting?

If so, graduate study at the TAS (TransAtlantic Studies) Program of the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora is for you! Krakow is simply one of the most beautiful cities on the planet and one of the best places I can think of for teaching and learning. Filled with charm, cozy cafes and cellar nightclubs, the city is abuzz with student nightlife, and a vibrant art, music and theater scene.

Stroll down cobblestone streets past 1000 years of Polish architecture and history while you check your iPhone for the latest events. On the one hand, students attend class overlooking the Rynek (Europes largest medieval square) and on the other, they are involved in a globalized 21st century conversation. It is the perfect mixture for intellectual growth with a sense of history.

As a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Institute, I have been so impressed with the student body which is well-prepared, thoughtful, eager to learn, and genuinely nice people. The TAS student group comes from around the globe; and they are not only kind and lots of fun to be with, they are smart.

The Master of Art in TransAtlantic Studies (TAS) is a comprehensive, full-time interdisciplinary graduate program. It is directed primarily at foreign students who would like to study in Krakow. The program, taught entirely in English, focuses on various aspects of transatlantic relations. Graduates receive a diploma in cultural studies with major in TransAtlantic studies.

Without a doubt, the work TAS students have done in my courses is some of the best writing I have ever seen in 20+ years as a Professor. They are a warm and welcoming cadre and if I were a student all over again, I would enroll in TAS in a heartbeat. Student come from around the world, and courses in the TAS program are offered in English, so you can learn the beautiful Polish language in courses specially designed for you, or you can work solely in English if you choose. Either way, there are riches galore in Krakow and at the Jagiellonian University, which is one of the oldest and most venerable in Europe.
